Guide to a Calmer Christmas

Guide to surviving christmasAs Christmas and the festive season approaches, many of us look forward to the celebrations, the chance to spend time with loved ones, exchange gifts and create new memories. It can be a joyful time that brings people together and reminds us of the importance of connection.

However, it’s also well-known that this time of year can bring its own pressures. Amid the excitement, many people experience increased stress, financial strain, loneliness or memories of more difficult times. For some, the contrast between expectation and reality can make the season particularly challenging.

Looking after mental wellbeing is important all year round, and there are simple, practical steps that can make a real difference during the festive period:

  • Make time to relax – even short moments of calm can help restore balance.
  • Avoid overindulging – eating and drinking mindfully can improve both physical and mental wellbeing.
  • Stay active – gentle exercise, such as a walk, can boost mood and reduce stress.
  • Seek company where possible – spending time with others, whether friends, family or community groups, can ease feelings of isolation.

To offer further support, we’re sharing a helpful booklet—adapted with kind permission from Health and Social Care North Lanarkshire. It includes practical tips for navigating the festive season as well as useful contact information for anyone who may need additional help.

No one should feel alone at this time of year. Support is available, and taking small steps toward wellbeing can make the season a little brighter for everyone.
