Our Housing

We own and manage more than 2,000 properties for rent across central Scotland, with the majority located in Midlothian. Most of our homes have two or three bedrooms however we do have a small number of one and four bedroom properties.

To make sure properties aren't over or under occupied, we allocate our homes using the following rules:

Family size No of bedrooms
Single person 1 bedroom
Couple (depending on circumstances) 1 or 2 bedrooms
Single parent or couple with 1 child 2 bedrooms
Single parent or couple with 2 children 2 or 3 bedrooms
Single parent or couple with 3 or 4 children 3 or 4 bedrooms
Single parent or couple with 5 children 4 bedrooms

Unfortunately we are unable to house families with more than five children. However, we welcome applications from large families to demonstrate the need for larger properties when considering future developments.

Applying for a Melville property

When you apply for a house with us you may choose as many areas as you wish. However, the lack of, or slow turnover of particular sizes and types of properties in some areas, may result in a longer waiting time.

We share common housing registers with both Midlothian and South Lanarkshire councils. This means that if you would like to rent one of our properties you must fill in the joint application form and tick the Melville Housing box. The two councils manage the waiting lists and you should contact them if you wish to to find out the number of points you've been given or your current waiting list position.

When choosing your preferred areas you should also take into account the size of your household in relation to the size of properties available. Listed below are the size of properties we have across our main communities:
